CBMB: Marvel Confirms Cumberbatch to Play Dr. Strange

By Muuka Muyumba

Marvel confirmed today that Benedict Cumberbatch will play Dr. Strange in the scheduled film set to hit theaters November 4, 2016. The film, directed by Scott Derrickson with Jon Spaihts writing the screenplay, will follow the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.

Long-rumored to be in the running for the role, Cumberbatch is a fanboy and especially girl favorite, staking his claim to American stardom with his turn as a modern Sherlock Holmes that was a PBS smash hit and won him an Emmy. He is also well-known because of his role as the villain Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness. This year, Cumberbatch is likely to be in the Oscar hunt this year for The Imitation Game, the Alan Turing biopic from the Weinstein Co.

Cumberbatch joins Dr. Strange to oppose the rumored villain of the film, played by Daniel Bruhl, who was recently announced as a castmember in Captain America: Civil War.

Cumberbatch was reportedly set to be announced for the role back in October when Marvel presented its Phase 3 films, but the deal was not yet finalized at that time. Cumberbatch also joins Chadwick Boseman as the only announced new Phase 3 heroes. Marvel has yet to find its Captain Marvel, but many believe that this casting will be announced soon in time to shoot cameos for the upcoming MCU films like Avengers: Age of Ultron and possibly Ant-Man.
