CBMB: Marvel Closes in on a Black Widow Director

By Muuka Muyumba

Deadline reports that Marvel is aggressively developing a standalone film for Scarlett Johansson, and has its sights set on a female director. Australian helmer Cate Shortland on the short list according to the industry newsletter. Her recent credits include Lore and most recently Berlin Syndrome. Writer Jac Schaeffer is currently set to draft a script for the film.

Johansson is long been advocating for her own standalone film, but has been stymied by the machine that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which just celebrated its 10th birthday last month. The MCU is only now starting to prop up its female characters with Black Panther being a very female-dominated storyline, Ant-Man and the Wasp will feature a female hero in the title for the first time, and next spring Captain Marvel will break Carol Danvers in a big way.

Johansson started playing Natasha Romanoff way back in 2010 in Iron Man 2, and has been in a Marvel film almost every year since. Through her time as a hero, she has also seen the birth of her child, expanded into her music career, become a big political advocate, and has led big box office successes like Lucy. She continues to have one of the more acclaimed careers outside of the MCU compared to her male counterparts.

No word on when a Black Widow film fits in Marvel’s future, but we will update as soon as that news is available.
