CBMB: Margot Robbie Picks Cathy Yan to Direct Harley Quinn Movie

By Muuka Muyumba

In a surprising announcement, Warner Bros and DC Entertainment picked Cathy Yan to direct a yet-to-be-titled Harley Quinn spin-off film starring Oscar-nominee Margot Robbie. At the time of this article, the deal has not been consummated, but WB would likely be eager to announce a major superhero title under the direction of a female Asian director — a first of its kind.

Yan would make a huge leap in scale from her critically acclaimed Sundance film Dead Pigs, to an big-budget superhero actioner. However, Deadline reports that it was her presentation for Birds of Prey that reportedly blew away Warners executives Geoff Johns and Walter Hamada. Robbie also played a key role in this choice as she is using her own shingle, LuckyChap (along with Sue Kroll and her Kroll & Co Entertainment and Bryan Unkeless of Clubhouse Pictures), to help usher in this project to the big screen.

After several months of speculation, Yan would bring meld the concepts of a Birds of Prey film and Harley Quinn solo film that would set the beloved villainess against a team of heroes including Black Canary, Huntress, and Oracle. No word on who might appear in the film beyond the female characters, but all center around an established Batman character. WB and DC have yet to commit to a Batman solo film beyond plans that Matthew Reeves will tackle the hero next. However, we still have no confirmation that the current Batman, Ben Affleck, will continue in the role beyond last winter’s Justice League.

Yan is an interesting individual, having started out as a financial reporter working in New York, Hong Kong and Beijing before she turned to the arts and short filmmaking. Robbie is currently slated to return as Harley in the Suicide Squad 2 which is set to be directed by Gavin O’Connor.

No word on when we might see this project, but Yan’s addition will definitely make this movie’s development one to watch.
