CBMB: Lupita Nyong’o in Talks to Join Marvel’s Black Panther

By Muuka Muyumba

Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o is said to be in Talks for a pivotal role in Black Panther which is set to hit theaters in 2018. Nyong’o is a coveted Disney darling right now, having starred in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Jungle Book, and the upcoming Queen of Kwate.

Nyong’o is rumored to be playing the love interest to Chadwick Boseman’s breakout T’Challa character from Captain America: Civil War. Boseman’s performance has only caused the anticipation for his solo film to ratchet up to 11.

The interesting note about this potential casting is that Black Panther has been married to X-Men’s Storm in the comics. Obviously Marvel Studios would not be allowed to play in that sandbox but they were able to use Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) in Age of Ultron. However, that usage was based on when and where the characters made their debut in the comics.

Storm made her debut in the X-Men’s comics so her inclusion here is not likely. So, Nyong’o may be playing another traditional character like Monica Lynne or Malice. She could also be a fierce member of T’Challa’s Dore Milaje, the protectors of the King of Wakanda. Whoever she may be playing, it would be a waste to see Nyong’o merely as a love interest.

Ryan Coogler is on board to direct Black Panther based on a script by Joe Robert Cole. The film which will likely also feature Martin Freeman as Everett Ross, and Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue. Based on the end of Civil War, we may also see Sebastian Stan as The Winter Soldier play a role in the storyline.

The movie hits theaters on July 18, 2018.
