CBMB: Key Black Panther Character Revealed at Cinema Con
By Muuka Muyumba
Today, during Disney’s Cinema Con presentation, Marvel unveiled our first look at the highly anticipated Black Panther film, and line up of movie stars set to hit theaters in February of 2018. The film is currently filming all over the world, and will center on T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) adjusting to life in Wakanda after the world is introduced to the mythical Black Panther. T’Challa’s biggest challenge will be defending his rule against enemies from outside and inside his country.
The film features a remarkable cast, including Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger, Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira as Dora Milaje, Martin Freeman as Everett Ross, Daniel Kaluuya as W’Kabi, Angela Bassett as Ramonda, Forest Whitaker as Zuri, Winston Duke as M’Baku, Sterling K. Brown as N’Jobu, and Andy Serkis as Klaw. Despite this ridiculous cast, many fans had been wondering whether one of Marvel’s coolest heroes would be part of the Black Panther universe, and this presentation answered those questions as Leticia Wright was revealed to be playing T’Challa’s ambitious sister Shuri.
Wright is a young Guyanan actor who has a short list of credits in mostly British productions, but is best known as an android on AMC/BBC’s Humans sci-fi show. Wright will play T’Challa’s little sister, Shuri, who was created by writers Reginald Hudlin and John Romita, Jr., first appearing in Black Panther, Vol. 4, #2 (May 2005). One of the coolest features of the character is her desire to be the Black Panther and the ruler of her country. She is a character of immense resolve, who in the current run of the comics, is trapped between living and dead as T’Challa often prays to her for counsel. Shuri appeared in the Black Panther animated series, voiced by Scandal star Kerry Washington.
Marvel’s Black Panther is being directed by Ryan Coogler from a script by Joe Robert Cole.
