CBMB: Joseph Gordon-Levitt Confirms that Development for Sandman is Moving Forward

By Muuka Muyumba

Today, during an ask-me-anything session on Reddit, actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt answered fans questions about his various projects as well as his true passion, Hit Record, a media aggregator that produces crowd-sourced videos, music, books, and art.

One of Gordon-Levitt most popular fan requests were answers about his mysterious DC Entertainment project The Sandman. In February 2014, it was revealed that David S. Goyer would be producing an adaptation of the graphic novel, alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Neil Gaiman with Jack Thorne hired to write the script.

Gordon-Levitt offered that the team had “[b]een doing a lot of work with David Goyer and Jack Thorne, working on the screenplay. We’ve been doing our meetings at the DC office, which is a frickin rad place to work. Also just had a great conversation last week with David and Mr. Gaiman. Neil has been extremely big hearted with me, and he’s the one I want to please most.”

Many people wondered about the status of the film after Warner Bros. President Kevin Tsujihara announced their DC Entertainment film slate in October 2014. It was Gaiman who clarified that while the film was not announced with the DC slate, the film will be distributed by Vertigo and will be announced with that slate of films.

The Sandman grew out of a proposal by Gaiman to revive DC Comic’s 1974–1976 series The Sandman, illustrated by Jack Kirby and Ernie Chua and written by Joe Simon and Michael Fleisher. Gaiman crafted the new character from an initial image of “a man, young, pale and naked, imprisoned in a tiny cell, waiting until his captors passed away … deathly thin, with long dark hair, and strange eyes.”

The Sandman became a big hit for DC Comics as a gothic-horror ’90s classic attracting an audience unlike most comic titles with a large female readership. The character became so popular that the Vertigo anti-hero crossed over into the common DC Comics series, like Green Arrow.

The popularity of the title has generated much interest from various production companies for film and TV series, but Gordon-Levitt and Gainman’s involvement has been most serious and close to confirmation. Names like Peter Jackson, Sam Raimi, and Terry Gilliam have all circled around the project for years. Despite his involvement, Gordon-Levitt revealed that the script phase is no guarantee for success either, saying “I hesitate to definitively say when it might go before the cameras, but the one thing different between other iterations and ours is that Neil Gaiman has been in the room with us and is a vital part of the team. We have a draft Warners is very happy with and we’re moving forward, knock on wood.”

So, The Sandman closes in on the finish line and we wait for the announcement of a release date. Are you eager to see Gaiman’s vision realized?
