CBMB: Jared Leto Signs on for Morbius Movie

By Muuka Muyumba

Oscar winner, and our erstwhile Joker, Jared Leto may have had enough with Warner Bros., and DC Comics playing coy about his future as as the Clown Prince of Crime. Leto will now play in the Sony-Marvel-Spiderverse sandbox with a stand-alone Morbius film.

The project is said to be set up at Sony with director Daniel Espinosa who directed the space-action film Life starring Spider-Man: Far From Home’s Jake Gyllenhaal and Deadpool’s Ryan Reynolds. The feature project that has a script by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, the duo showrunning Netflix’s Lost in Space. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will produce with Lucas Foster.

The project is based on antihero Morbius the Living Vampire.

Morbius first appeared in 1971’s Amazing Spider-Man No. 101, and was created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane. That issue also happened to be the first issue not written by Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee. The character’s alter ego Dr. Michael Morbius develops a rare blood disease that he attempts to cure with disastrous results. He becomes a ‘Living Vampire’ who craves blood, has fangs, and battles Spider-Man.

Morbius would be another attempt by Sony to expand its Spider-Man brand alongside his rebirth within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As producer Amy Pascal put it, Sony is building a world ‘adjacent‘ to the MCU with its Spider-Man properties currently in development. We will see Venom, starring Tom Hardy this fall with projects based on Black Cat and Silver Sable, Silk, and The Sinister Six said to be in the works.

No word on when we can expect a Morbius film.
