CBMB: James Gunn Will Returning for Guardians, Volume 3!!
By Muuka Muyumba
Guardians of the Galaxy writer and director James Gunn has announced that he will be returning to the franchise when Marvel sets the slate for Volume 3. Gunn wrote a lengthy Facebook post noting specifically that he had been famously coy about returning for another installment, but it was his working relationship with Marvel and Disney that had made his job that much more fun and easy.
Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 1 collected $94,320,883 in its opening weekend back in August 2014, and now Volume 2 is currently prospected to earn close to $150 million in its opening weekend in the U.S. alone, so Marvel and Disney bringing back Gunn seems to be a no-brainer. However, when you consider his previous work before Guardians, you could be safe saying that Gunn specialized in high grade B-movie material. Don’t get me wrong, I love Slither and Super, but honestly, most of the audience who have seen the first Guardians movie hasn’t seen any of Gunn’s previous work.
Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 2 hits theaters in 2 weeks while the review embargo will reportedly end tomorrow, so we’ll know pretty early on whether audiences will be properly ginned up for a good movie. Marvel has shown that they know how to make good movies, and Guardians has a particularly pointed attachment with movie-going audiences whether it’s Groot and baby Groot, or Drax, or Rocket, or Gamora.
Volume 2 will see Peter (Chris Pratt) will meet his father, Ego the Living Planet (Kurt Russell), but we don’t know much beyond that at this point. The film returns Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Bradley Cooper voicing Rocket, and Vin Diesel voicing Baby Groot.
Volume 3 would be Mr. Gunn’s 3rd Marvel film o word on when we might see Volume 3, but if the math holds, we should probably expect an announcement for a 2020 date.
