CBMB: Jake Gyllenhaal Reportedly in Talks for Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 Villain

By Muuka Muyumba

THR is reporting that Oscar-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal is jumping into the superhero world by playing the villain in the upcoming sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming. Gyllenhaal is rumored to be playing Mysterio in the wall-crawlers second solo outing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In the comics, Mysterio has had a few alter-egos, but the Quentin Beck was the first creation by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #13. Beck was a special effects specialist and stunt man, but dreamed on being a leading man, and rages against the world when he fails to crossover. It will be really interesting to see whether this origin sticks for someone with such a recognizable leading man face as Gyllenhaal.

Gyllenhaal has long been a topline actor, but also a topline name for superhero vacancies like Batman and Green Lantern. Now, he may enter the world of superheroes as a villain which may afford him the luxury of a one-picture deal. Most superhero roles require a minimum three-picture contract, and regularly scare away top-tier talent with a fear of commitment. Gyllenhaal can look at how affecting a performance like Michael B. Jordan had on Marvel’s Black Panther, and knows fans won’t forget his one-and-done role. That being said, Mysterio is one of the Sinister Six and could return for another run at Spider-Man.

Tom Holland, Marisa Tomei, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon will all likely return for the sequel to the movie that made $880.2 million worldwide. The sequel has been rumored to be a globe-trotting affair with Peter possibly on a semester abroad, but still saving lives. Holland was just seen in Avengers: Infinity War and will likely return in Avengers 4 in May of 2019 before this sequel hits on July 5, 2019.

Jon Watts will return to direct the film.
