CBMB: Homecoming is Casting a Wide Web for the Spider-Verse
By Muuka Muyumba
Marvel and Sony are working together to build a new arm of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and recent additions to the cast reveal that this new arm has some extremely interesting character actors, and possibly pivotal people in Marvel comics lore. Spider-Man: Homecoming is currently filming in Atlanta, and these new additions promise an exciting expansion on the MCU.
Today, news broke that Angourie Rice (The Good Guys) had been added to the ever-expanding cast in an unknown role. Many are guessing that she’ll be the new Gwen Stacy, and possibly Spider-Gwen, as Sony looks to fill that pivotal role in the Spider-verse.
What else is clear from the recent additions is that Marvel (who is reportedly in charge of casting) is filling the ranks of the Spider-verse with a diverse and intriguing cast of character actors. Note that Marvel isn’t really focused on the movie actors du jour, they are looking for actors who are cutting their teeth in cable series that give them room to work. A few weeks back, two of these actors, Michael Mando (Better Call Saul), Garcelle Beauvais (NYPD Blue), and Bokeem Woodbine (Fargo) were revealed to have landed roles.
We don’t know what Spider-Man characters any of the actors are playing, but whoever they might be. The current expansive cast includes Tom Holland reprising his role as Peter Parker, Marisa Tomei as May Parker, Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, Zendaya as Michelle, Abraham Attah, Tony Revolori as Manuel, Michael Keaton as the Vulture, Logan Marshall-Green rumored to The Tinkerer, Martin Starr, Tyne Daly, Tiffany Epensen, Donald Glover, Kenneth Choi, Michael Barbieri, Laura Harrell, Hannibal Burress, Isabella Amara, Jorge Lendebork Jr. and JJ Totah.
So far, Marvel has not produced an official release announcing the entire cast as they do with their Marvel Studios films. This is technically a Sony production, and Marvel may not be able to announce the full cast per usual, and notice that the film isn’t even listed on Marvel’s comprehensive movie page.
Homecoming hits theaters on July 7, 2017.
