CBMB: Gavin O’Connor to Direct Suicide Squad 2

By Muuka Muyumba

Warner Bros. has tapped writer/direct Gavin O’Connor to helm it’s follow up to the Oscar-winning (I know!) Suicide Squad. O’Connor is best known for his writing and directing skills on gritty dramas like The Accountant and Warrior, and hopes to bring more gritty realism to the Squad.

That being said, WB probably believed they had their gritty director already locked up when David Ayer wrote and directed the first one. However, the relationship soured when Ayer voiced his displeasure with studio meddling during his film. Although Squad 1 was a rousing success, making $745 million, the film was lavished with withering criticism about uneven toner, dumb plotting, and listless characters.

All these criticism fell at Ayer’s feet who initially played ball in the media, but later acknowledged that the studio played too big a role in the film’s finished product. So, WB went searching for a new director with rumored pointing to Mel Gibson and Jaume Collet-Serra.

Gibson acknowledged his flirtation with the property but ultimately felt it might have been too commercial for his R-rated vision. Collet-Serra also passed but due to an in-depth demand schedule.

O’Connor knocked it out of the park on The Accountant which happened took be an WB project starring Ben Affleck. The film was ridiculous but most viewers saw it as a return to original action films of a bygone era. For Affleck, the film priced took be the most successful film of a busy year that included Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad and his own film Live By Night. The Accountant made $155 million at there box office and garnered the best critical reception of all those films. WB is said to be working on a sequel to the film.

The film is said to be a top priority for WB as they look to put the film in production next year.  Suicide Squad 2 will bring back the main stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto.
