CBMB: Gambit Movie Director Change Prompting X-Men Release Date Changes

Channing Tatum must be wondering what he has to do to convince a director stay on his film. Tatum has long been slated to star in Marvel’s Gambit film for Fox, but has struggled to hold on to a director for development to get to far along. Most recent reports had Tatum ramping up for production on the film, saying recently that they were working on making the film “more New Orleans”.

Gore Verbinski had been the latest name attached to direct, but he had been preceded by Rupert Wyatt and Doug Liman. Verbinski had been the only name to stick for as long as he did after building his career with the first couple Pirates of the Caribbean movies. No names have emerged for a possible replacement.

This change has seemingly forced Fox to make some significant changes to its X-Men film slate per The Hollywood Reporter. The New Mutants is moving from April 13, 2018 to February 22, 2019 to improve on the horror aspect. Deadpool 2 is moving up from June 1, 2018 to May 18, 2018, and will now be one of two Fox/Marvel films released this year along with X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

Gambit is now moving from February 14, 2019, to June 7, 2019.

All of this is coming on the backdrop of the Fox-Disney deal that is not likely to resolve itself until 2019 at the earliest. Disney and Marvel are keen on the X-Men joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so any future development on Fox/Marvel properties bring questions of whether we’ll see any of these characters next to Captain America. These changes are seismic and could signal even greater influence from Marvel Studios over these upcoming films.
