CBMB: Fox Signals The Expansion of Their X-Men Universe

By Muuka Muyumba

Fox has closed a deal with The Fault In Our Stars director Josh Boone to co-write and direct The New Mutants, a standalone spinoff that expands its X-Men movie universe. The series, already part of the X-Men Comics universe, introduces a new crop of mutant characters born with special powers. Boone will co-write with Knate Gwaltney. Simon Kinberg will produce with Lauren Shuler Donner.

Kinberg said of the deal: “We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters.”

The New Mutants is the first confirmation of the expansion of the universe beyond characters we’ve previously seen on screen. Fox is bringing Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Gambit (Channing Tatum) to the big screen, but these are roles that have appeared in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The first team of New Mutants characters was created by Chris Claremont and artist Bob McLeod. They first appeared in 1982’s Marvel Graphic Novel #4 and are subsequently featured in their own title from 1983 until 1991.

That team included Cannonball (Samuel Guthrie), Karma (Xi’an Coy Manh), Mirage (Danielle Moonstar, originally codenamed Psyche), Sunspot (Roberto da Costa), and Wolfsbane (Rahne Sinclair). The introduction of the characters may be a key feature in the spinoff of a new series from X-Men: Apocalypse which will focus on the younger characters at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.

The New Mutants is still a couple of years away from hitting the big screen. Let the casting rumors begin!!
