CBMB: Fox Debuts a Scary New Trailer for The New Mutants

By Muuka Muyumba

Fox debuted a new look at their X-Men universe just in time for a freak Friday the 13th promotion. X-Men’s The New Mutants  comes from the X-universe creative team of producers Simon Kinberg, Karen Rosenfelt, Lauren Shuler Donner with X-Men newcomer Josh Boone as director and writer (in collaboration with Knate Lee) on the project.

The film will tell the story of a creepy institute that will test the strengths of a group of teenage mutants who are being tested by an evil doctor, Dr. Cecelia Reyes (Alice Braga). The concept seems unique at first glance, but remember that we just saw experimentation inflicted on some very young mutants as we saw in last spring’s Logan. There the experimentation took place in a facility in Mexico, apparently run by the Essex Corporation, which is the company owned by Nathaniel Essex aka Mr. Sinister. We saw this group pop up at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse.

No word yet on whether the Essex Corporation has anything to do with the testing on the New Mutants. In the comics, The New Mutants arrived in the early ’80s, and were made up of a team consisting of characters like Cannonball, Karma, Monster, Wolfsbane, and Sunspot. The series was meant to show true teen angst and growing pains beyond what other X-Men comics had done before. In the movie, we will be introduced to Cannonball (Charlie Heaton), Magik (Anya Taylor-Joy), Sunspot (Roberto da Costa), Mirage (Blu Hunt), and Wolfsbane (Maisie Williams).

Boone appears to have crafted astory that will follow in the tradition of Logan by telling a superhero story through a specific genre. In Logan, director James Mangold framed Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) as an aging gunslinger hiding out in a ghost town who has to fight one last time to save his younger self. The New Mutants will likely show us an origin story of young mutants who will battle their demons, and uncover a much larger conspiracy in the process.

One part of the conspiracy I can’t wait to see is how they will work in what’s already been teased in pre-production: Demon Bear! This creature haunts the dreams of Mirage, and may or may not be her dead parents reincarnated. The Demon Bear also draws power from negative human emotions and is capable of teleportation, immense strength, transformation, and can corrupt humans souls. Sort of sounds a bit like Pennywise the bear!

The New Mutants hits theaters on April 13, 2017.
