CBMB: Fox Already Targeting a Deadpool Sequel
By Muuka Muyumba
Deadpool hits theaters in 3 days, but is already garnering resoundingly positive reactions from those who’ve had the luxury of an early screening. This has prompted Fox to greenlight a sequel though no release date was announced.
Fox is experimenting with an unprecedented R-rated superhero film that looks to establish a variant strain of X-Men films in a more adult vein. They are off to a flying start with the fast and funny film from writer/director Tim Miller and star Ryan Reynolds who have populated the airwaves with viral videos and traditional commercials that has launched the anti-hero into the public’s consciousness.
If Deadpool works, then Fox can legitimately look to push beyond the traditional X-Men fodder that has been tried and trusted for the last 16 years. Fox once had another similar franchise in Blade that, coincidentally, included Reynolds in a very similar role to Deadpool in the final film. Unfortunately, Blade was never able to overcome the loss of Wesley Snipes to incarceration and age. Ultimately, Blade reverted back to Marvel Studios who is building their own R-rated universe on Netflix.
Deadpool hits theaters on February 14, 2016.
