CBMB: Director Jon Watts Opens Up About Spider-Man

By Muuka Muyumba

Cop Car director Jon Watts sat down with Entertainment Weekly recently to talk about his Sundance hit, but then strayed into new territory in discussing his work on Spider-Man. Watts touted the uniqueness of new Peter Parker Tom Holland noting that Holland’s youth was a benefit.

“He can be a real high school student, Watts said when asked what Holland can bring to the role. “That’s why people love Spider-Man. He’s the most grounded, relatable of superheroes. And Tom can really do that. He captures that. And he can do a standing back-flip. He’s perfect.”

Watts then talked about the unique challenge of working in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “I mean, it’s a big universe, so everyone sort of works with each other to make sure that there’s continuity and that it all fits together,” Watts said. “It’s really exciting actually. We’re just getting started, working on the script and all that, but it’s going to be a great process.”

Finally, Watts remarked how crazy it was that Marvel actually saw his film Cop Car. He was surprised “[Marvel executives] really liked it. Now, I’ve got to make a slightly more expensive version,” he explained. “It’s an opportunity to just have a much bigger canvas instead of just scrapping together any story you can.”

Marvel’s version of Spider-Man will be produced by Marvel president Kevin Feige and former Sony exec Amy Pascal from a script by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein. The film will hit the theaters on July 28, 2017.
