CBMB: Deadpool 2 Casts a Cable
By Muuka Muyumba
Fox Studios announced today that they have cast Josh Brolin to be their cable in the upcoming Deadpool sequel. I know, I know, it’s confusing, but once you get past that, it’s an amazing coup of a casting. Brolin, of course, is best known as an award-winning actor of such films as No Country for Old Men, Sicario, and ‘W‘. To fanboys and girls, he is best known as playing the role of Thanos in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War films.
Cable, aka, Nathan Summers, is the genetically-altered offspring of Cyclops and a Jean Grey clone named Madelyne Pryor (don’t ask). He made his first appearance in the comics in 1986’s Uncanny X-Men #201. The character of Nathan Summers was created by Chris Claremont, while the Cable persona was co-created by Rob Liefeld and Louise Simonson.
Once Deadpool became a cinematic reality, fans had been clamoring for Fox to open up the floodgates to several unseen X-characters, but one name remained at the top of the list. Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds went on to tease the addition of Cable in a sequel along with another fan-favorite Domino in an end-credit tag at the end of Deadpool. Reynolds announced that Atlanta star Zazie Beetz would play Domino just a few weeks back.
Fox had been reportedly considering names like Michael Shannon, Russell Crowe, David Harbour, and Kyle Chandler. Brolin’s name had been completely off the radar for the scoopers out there because of his current commitment to the other side of the Marvelverse. Does this now suggest that the Avengers will dispatch with Thanos, who will be a CGI character, fairly quickly?
Maybe, because, Brolin’s involvement in the Deadpool and X-universe is not just a one-off role as Fox Studios, Reynolds, and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have been clear that Cable will be part of a New Mutants or X-Force film in the future. In the recent Deadpool short, No Good Deed, Reynolds as Wade Wilson is seen changing into his Deadpool costume in a phone booth tagged with ‘Nathan Summers Coming Soon’ and ‘Hope!’. Both tags are allusions to the future of these films in that Cable is Nathan Summers and Hope is his adoptive daughter who has cataclysmic powers he must protect.
Deadpool 2 is currently set to hit theaters in 2018 with Reese and Wernick scripting the sequel and David Leitch directing.
