CBMB: Dark Phoenix to Reunite X-Men under Kinberg Direction

By Muuka Muyumba

Deadline is reporting that Simon Kinberg had signed on as director of the next installment of the x men franchise. Dark Phoenix will adapt the classic storyline of the explosion of Jean Grey’s psionic power into a dark and vengeful force of nature called the Phoenix force.

The movie will return many of the stars of X-Men Apocalypse with Sophie Turner as the aforementioned Grey.  Also returning are Michael Fassbender as Magneto, James McAvoy as Professor X, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Kody Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler, and Tye Sheridan as Cyclops. One notable omission of the returning cast is Hugh Jackman as Wolverine who has sworn up and down that Logan was his last go-around as the anti-hero.

Deadline also notes that Jessica Chastain is circling the project possibly to play Lilandra Neramani of the Shi’ar Empire. This space race of characters could propel Fox’s X-Men franchise into uncharted waters as the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been the lone comic book film franchise to breach the outer limits of space with the Guardians of the Galaxy, if you don’t count those poo-doo Fantastic Four films.

Kinberg would be popping his directing cherry on this project which is sure to cause some concern. However, Kinberg has been highly involved in development of all things X-Men for Fox, as well as having a producing hand in Star Wars.

No word yet on a release date.
