CBMB: Channing Tatum Closes Gambit Deal with Fox

By Muuka Muyumba

Reports earlier this week had Tatum and Fox possibly parting ways on the Gambit production, but today, we learned that the deal had closed with Tatum set to star as the titular hero.

The reports of Tatum and Fox fudging on the deal were premature, but not completely unfounded as sources say that Tatum and the studio did hit a sensitive spot in negotiations. The Hollywood Reporter acknowledged that such back-and-forth is a normal part of top-level talent dealmaking.

However, the reports of difficulty were particularly odd considering that Tatum had made his first public appearance in support of the film at San Diego Comic-Con only 2 weeks ago. One of the sticking points may have been that Fox is looking to position Tatum in a role in their Fox universe similar to the way that Wolverine/Hugh Jackman broke out in the previous 7 films over the last 15 years.

Many pundits believed that Fox may have been balking at the cost of the upcoming Gambit film after a leaked funding report from the Louisiana film board’s budget assessment for the upcoming production revealed that it could run Fox $155 million.

Tutam’s Gambit film is set to be directed by Rupert Wyatt, who directed Fox’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Josh Zetumer penned the script for the film, based on a treatment by Gambit co-creator Chris Claremont. Tatum, Reid Carolin, Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg are producing.

Gambit is currently slated to hit theaters on October 7, 2016.
