CBMB: Black Canary Casting Rumors Emerge

By Muuka Muyumba

Latino-Review is reporting that Warners Bros is looking to cast actors for the role of Black Canary to first appear in the Justice League films. Two blondes, Abbey Lee (Mad Max: Fury Road) and Alona Tal (Burn Notice, Supernatural) have emerged at the top of the list for the role.

Black Canary was created by Robert Kanigher and Carmine Infantino, and debuted in Flash Comics #86 (August 1947). As one of the earlier female superheroes, she would meet the WB’s directive to feature roles for women as part of the JLA. In the Golden Age comics, she was also known as Dinah Drake, and later was cast as Dinah Lance.

If the rumor is true, then this would lead to greater indications that we are less likely to get Stephen Amell, TV’s Green Arrow, on the big screen since he already has a couple of Black Canaries on his roster. The Canary and Arrow have long been partners in fighting crime on TV and in the comics.

The role is said to be part of the roster of heroes for Justice League One and Two as casting searches are underway for the rest of the heroes and villains for the films. However, Latino-Review also suggests that the role could extend well beyond her introduction to a Birds of Prey series of films featuring the Canary along with Barbara Gordon’s Oracle.

The story is gestating and more details should follow soon as casting continues for the future of the DCEU.
