CBMB: Benedict Wong to Play Classic Dr. Strange Character ‘Wong’

By Muuka Muyumba

Star of The Martian and Marco Polo, Benedict Wong, has joined the stellar cast of Marvel’s Dr. Strange to play the classic comics sidekick ‘Wong’. In the classic Dr. Strange comics, he had a loyal man-servant named Wong who was also his martial arts protector.

Wong first appeared in Strange Tales #147 in July 1963. Unfortunately, the early incarnation of this character was a stereotype Asian of mysticism and karate. His character received an update in the 2006 miniseries Dr. Strange: The Oath where it was revealed that Wong came from a family of warrior monks living in Kamar-Taj. Wong possesses no superhuman powers, but is a master of martial arts, but is well-acquainted with mystical powers of Dr. Strange.

In the recent animated version of Dr. Strange, his character was also a master sorcerer and mentor to a Strange in training. Marvel’s version of the hero could be a combination of the different version of the character, but to maximize the film’s appeal in Asia, one would assume that Wong’s Wong will be a powerful hero himself.

Another possible link to the larger Marvel universe, is that Wong could be a link between Dr. Strange’s universe, and the Marvel Netflix world as they look to break the world of Iron Fist through K’un-Lun.

Marvel’s Dr. Strange stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the Doctor, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo, Mads Mikkelsen, Rachel McAdams, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One. The film hits theaters on N0vember 4, 2016.
